Sleepless City
Text and photo by Connie Bickman (Tribe of Women, 2001)
sounds fill the air
day and night. the road
of engines and the
Islamic Prayer echoes,
carry the message.
streets late hour, span
the night drifts down
vigorous beat against
the pane; glass rattle
response, midnight can’t sleep.
i give this city my thoughts.
a clap of thunder
early morning, remains
sleepless.
invade.
remove.
This is a form of poetry that I love. It works so well for my neuro-wiring. It feels like something that already existed is being uncovered. I especially like doing it with my own poetry to find an underlying secret.
Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is “Erasure poetry — also known as blackout poetry — is written by taking an existing text and erasing or blacking out individual words. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own erasure/blackout poem. You could use a page from a favorite book, a magazine, what have you. It can be especially fun to play with a book you don’t know.”
