Bad Love
(domestic violence content warning)
with epiphany instinct, doors lock
a spider web blooms on shield silver
a gibbous moon on the blue steel walls
of my spaceship armor, huddled
prayers ricochet off the dashboard
I leave myself there, where she is safe
contrition submission remission
But he never hits her
putrid profanity pours from
a hidden river of lost sadness
i am worthless, you think i’m stupid
you think you know everything
you are a controlling bitch but
don’t ever say i am an asshole
her silent white lips scream remorse
contrition submission remission
But he never hits her
a quiver of hands on a
trapped tight baby belly
60 mph on a dead end
street, white knuckles
steer coiled tight around
her hazel oyster eyes blinded by fear
contrition submission remission
But he never hits her
lavender crescent moon under
waning blank eyes, polly pink
cupcakes ripple a still pond floor
pale plate cracks the light out
a purple spangled bracelet on her wrist
contrition submission remission
But he never hits her
an altar ego crumbling balcony with
with a crimson view, scattering
penny nail glass shards and
wall boards carved with small
planets, orbiting in space,
there is no escape velocity
contrition submission remission
But he never hits her
flying abandoned cell phone
rage, she returns to her ghost
numb limbs, out of her mind
with crying children, a running
of the bulls in a locked room.
incision
My firm calloused hands on
a gold coin lock. My kisses on
wet small cheeks. a sonic boom
snap of trust. I am a star born.
excision
envision
I am the planet.
I am the moon.
I am the velocity.
he will never hit me
Domestic violence is a topic that is still swept under the rug. It’s time for us to be real about what happens to 30% of women at some point in their lifetime. This poem is the first time I feel like I portrayed it in its rawness. My words are coming out from behind the closed doors.
Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is “In his poem, “Poet, No Thanks,” Jean D’Amérique repeats the phrase “I wasn’t a poet” multiple times, while describing other things that he instead claims to have been. In your poem for today, use a simple phrase repeatedly, and then make statements that invert or contradict that phrase.”
